Overview:

EGS is seeking a Specialty Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN, which provides integral mission support to the NNSA.

 

This position is full-time and will serve the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN.

 

Responsibilities:

Specialty Mechanical Engineers will produce design and procurement documents of specialty and first of a kind equipment. Equipment examples include gloveboxes, furnaces, high vacuum systems, gas transfer/analysis systems, process skids, metal casting, and machining equipment.

To be successful in this position, applicants should have experience and future career interests in the following skills/subject areas:

 

Technical:

  • Produce a variety of design output documents including but not limited to systems requirements documents, calculations, drawings, bills of materials, specifications, datasheets, inspection plans, assembly instructions, and test plans/procedures.
  • Ensure design outputs are of sufficient detail for use by the end user/design requestor.
  • Develop build to print design drawings. This may be self-performed for small tasks, or directing and checking the output of mechanical designer(s) for larger scopes.
    • Strong understanding of 3D CAD modeling software and drawings
    • Consistent application of product numbering, drawing structure, and drawing numbers
    • Use of drafting standards such as ASME Y14.100 or the Drawing Requirements Manual
    • Application of ASME Y14.5 for dimensional tolerances and inspection criteria
    • Tolerance stack-up and error analysis calculations
  • Prepare calculations and analyses associated with machine design (to include, but not limited to, finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations and heat transfer calculations).
  • Develop detailed equipment specifications and data sheets.
  • Manage project requirements, including extraction of requirements from higher level design criteria, the definition of applicable functional and operational requirements, flow-down to design documents & procurement specifications, and verification matrix activities prior to equipment startup.
  • Select materials which are compatible with corrosive gases and solutions.
  • Possess general shop experience with metal cutting tools and sheet metal fabrication (e.g., mills, lathes, wire EDM, bending, water/laser cutting, etc.).
  • Design fixtures and tooling for part fabrication, inspection, and assembly.
  • Apply welding, non-destructive examination, and leak checking code references, symbols, and notes in accordance with AWS and/or ASME standards.
  • Define and document the acceptance criteria, inspection plans, and testing required to qualify equipment and components.
  • Perform technical evaluations to disposition non-conformances, respond to request for waivers/deviations, and manage engineering change packages.
  • Conduct technical evaluations of custom and off-the-shelf components to identify attributes which are critical to performance.
  • Support technical evaluations of structures, systems, and components to identify items relied on for safety (IROFS).

 

Group/Project Coordination:

  • Create pre-project documents, including statements of work, cost estimates, and sequencing of design outputs for project scheduling.
  • Support procurement activities by preparing and reviewing contract documents and coordinating with procurement officers.
  • Integrate equipment into existing facilities, including interface control documents and coordinating tie-ins with facility engineering representatives.
  • Coordinate design reviews and design document transmittals.
  • Plan and direct engineering personnel in the fabrication of equipment and test-control apparatus (Heat-Transfer Engineers, Control and Instrumentation Engineers, or Hydraulic Engineers; Product Design Engineers or Test Engineers when mechanical engineering principles are primarily used).
  • Support the fabrication, installation, testing, readiness, and startup of custom designed equipment.
  • Promote a professional code of conduct and ethical behavior.
  • Provide technical direction and trouble-shooting skills.
  • Lead small design teams.
  • Provide direction to designer/drafters.
  • Perform peer-review or formal design verification of design output documents.

 

Security:

  • Promote a strong security culture. This involves understanding how to produce design outputs in/with areas, computers, and communication channels which have multiple levels of security control.
  • Perform design scope on sensitive projects while maintaining excellent. communication with the classification office, derivative classifiers, reviewing officials, and high-risk property management.
  • Communicate the importance of protecting proprietary or sensitive information and complying with cybersecurity policies and guidelines.

 

Quality:

  • Maintain configuration management of design outputs through project data management systems, to ensure revision control and change control activities/workflows.
  • Perform design activities in accordance with documented design procedures, processes instructions, and forms (e.g.: Design Control, Design Reviews, Design Verification, Requirements Management, and Change Control Procedures).
  • Perform verification matrices to ensure design criteria and requirements have assigned acceptance criteria, including documented inspection plans, vendor surveillance, and criteria for the disposition of non-conformances.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program, a minimum of 10 years' experience with design/specification of custom mechanical equipment. 
  • Hours will be 06:00 - 16:30, Monday through Thursday on-site at Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN.
  • Successful drug screening.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program plus 20 years plus of direct experience.
  • Active Q – Clearance Preferred.
  • CREO 3D CAD experience.
  • ANSYS FEA experience.
  • Glovebox design experience.
    • American Glovebox Society standards of practice & guidelines experience.
  • Design experience with custom industrial equipment and process skids on government projects.
