Position Location:
This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary
The Manager, Radiation Protection is responsible for implementing and maintaining the 10CFR835 program at N3B, including the development of procedures and policies to protect against radiation hazards, control personnel radiation exposures, and minimize environmental releases, coordination and oversight of the radiation protection training program, and participation in internal assessments and audits. The Manager, Radiation Protection provides technical oversight and guidance for the clearance and release of items and property in accordance with DOE Order 458.1. The Manager, Radiation Protection stays abreast of federal, state, local, and industry radiation protection regulations and ensures compliance with the standards. 
 
This position reports to the N3B Radiation Protection Director within the Engineering and Nuclear Safety organization.
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Develops radiation protection procedures, methodologies, and capabilities.
  • Reviews work documents and procedures for radiological safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and/or reviews survey plans, Final Status Surveys, and release reports in support of DOE O 458.1 and MARSSIM activities.
  • Serves as the RP Training Program Coordinator, managing radiological training, qualification, and requalification programs.
  • Leads assessments to ensure regulatory compliance and effective operations.
  • Serves as a voting member on the N3B ALARA Committee.
  • May act as a Subject Matter Expert in specific areas and provide technical support to Project Managers.
  • Will train and mentor junior team members.

 
Job Requirements

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
  • Preferred experience in performing DOE O 458.1, MARSSIM, and MARSAME activities.
  • Proficiency in Visual Sample Plan, ProUCL, and RESRAD software.
  • In depth working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and DOE orders as well as ISM and EMS.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiological principles, concepts, and techniques and ability to perform highly complex and critical tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
 
 
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelors’ degree combined with 7 years’ relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.
 
Education Equivalency:  2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.
 
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or NRRPT is desired.
 
Business Associations: 
Interacts frequently with internal personnel and outside representatives at various levels. Participates and presents at meetings with internal and external representatives. Interaction typically concerns resolution of operational and scheduling issues.
 
Impact:
Decisions have an impact on work processes and outcomes. Erroneous decisions or recommendations or failure to complete assignments normally result in serous delays and considerable expenditure of additional time, human resources and funds.
 
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office work environment.
