Job Title:         Medical Development Manager
Reports to:      Chief Veterinary Officer/Vice President Medical Operations
 
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The development of future leaders is vital to an organization’s success.  The Medical Development Manager (MDM) is a key member of the regional management team and will lead the design and development of a regional Veterinary Medical Training Center which supports veterinarian and medical team training, mentoring and development.  This position will work closely with the Medical and Business Operations, University Relations Teams, and Human Resources in developing a robust training and development curriculum that will develop clinic leaders, promotes improved teamwork efficiencies, performance, and job satisfaction leading to the development of “Best in Class” high performance clinical teams.  New hires, current team members, externs, interns,
 and students will rotate through the Veterinary Medical Training Center to meet their onboarding, training, and mentoring needs. The MDM will ensure that minimum Standards of Care are developed and complied with at the clinic, outstanding patient care and client service are delivered, and Clinic Revenue Targets are achieved.  These standards can be incorporated across all MVP clinics. Some travel (15%) will be required in the role. This will include overnight and out of state travel. 
 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive.
 
Medical Director Veterinary Duties
  • Perform clinical duties included in the DVM JD
  • Collaborate with Regional Medical Directors (RMD) and Regional Director of Operations (RDO) to develop an annual operating plan for each clinic to include revenue targets and capex needs
  • Achieve specific team production goals as elected in the business plan
  • Maintain veterinary excellence by attending annual CE, striving for continuous improvement; leading innovation within the veterinary team
  • Work alongside the PM to facilitate and manage the DVM’s.  This may include:  Hiring, firing, disciplinary/corrective actions and the like.  
  • The Medical Director is to be responsible for oversight of the DVM work schedules.  This may include creating, maintaining DVM work schedules and making appropriate adjustments for PTO and/or CE time off requests. 
    • Hold monthly hospital doctors’ meetings.  Attend and participate in regular Medical Director meetings held by the RMD and or MVP (Paw conference).
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and DEA regulations within the hospital; ensure the hospital is exercising best practice for controlled substance compliance
 
Medical Team Mentoring, Training and Leadership Development
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to the Hospital Medical Directors/Leads and clinic medical teams to implement management strategies to improve teamwork efficiencies, increase pet care visits, per client transaction (PCT) maximization and appropriate charge capture.
 
  • Develop and implement training and mentoring programs through the medical business operations team to:
    • Improve Medical Teamwork
    • Develop medical teams that DVM’s can leverage in order to improve team efficiencies.
    • Increase client compliance
    • Ensure safe, consistent, efficient, therapeutic and ethical patient care resulting in improve patient outcome (Best in Class Care)
  • Leverage emerging technology to improve patient care, team efficiencies and client experience, ensuring that MVP practices are staying on the cutting edge of veterinary medical practice through both onsite as well a virtual mentoring programs
  • Collaborate with the Medical Advisory Board on program development and implementation and feedback on new products and technologies
 
Retention and Recruiting
  • Establish relationships with associate DVMs in the territory resulting in DVM engagement, retention, medical and surgical skill development, compassion fatigue abatement and modeling appropriate leadership behaviors.
  • Support University Primary Care Curriculum Programs and Recruiting events.
  • Speak publicly at Universities and Trade Shows to promote Continuing Education.
  • Support New Business Development by identifying leads and acquisition support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(Education, licenses, certifications, and experience required to fulfill the essential duties, include computer skills as required)
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; minimum of 5 years’ practical clinical experience in small animal medicine.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ progressive management experience required.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful fiscal and operating management; demonstrated financial expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing at strategic and operational levels.
  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint required.
  • Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position (English).
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information throughout all levels of the organization and/or with all clients and team members.
