Job Description

In this role you will be a Technical Leader, providing advice to senior decision makers and guiding our platform engineers as they enhance and maintain our World Class, web-based, Healthcare Platform.

 

Focusing on our Cloud - based infrastructure, you will perform several key tasks, including research and development, technical design and discovery, work preparation, code reviews and hands-on implementation.

 

To be suitable for this position, you should have significant prior experience working as an Infrastructure Architect or Senior level cloud platform engineer, on enterprise grade, web-based solutions.

 

Job Responsibilities: 


  • Technical leadership and implementation - You will be the go-to person for cloud infrastructure knowledge and expertise, working with both senior leaders and engineers to guide and build our solutions. We utilize a variety of technologies, serving both our customers and internal teams, and you will be the expert in those technologies, assisting engineers with day-to-day technical questions and helping them to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose results.
  • Performing technical discovery and feasibility assessments - You will ensure proposed infrastructure engineering work is achievable, properly scoped and well understood. You will do this for Engineering driven projects, as well as for requests originating from other parts of the business.
  • Researching, designing and communicating solutions - You will undertake research and design, either independently, or in collaboration with your colleagues via R&D projects, workshops and spike investigations. You will document technical designs and findings in an appropriate format, and you will communicate your proposals in a timely and effective way.
  • Preparing and estimating work - You will prepare work packages for the projects you own. You will ensure these are properly refined and estimated prior to commencement of work. You will also provide early, high-level estimates for certain technical projects, to assist with planning and prioritization.
  • Defining and updating internal platform engineering standards - You will be expected to stay up to date with industry best practices so that you can make recommendations and proposals for the department to adopt. You will maintain our standards documentation and communicate these to the wider department.

 
Job Requirements
 

  • You must be highly proficient in a broad range of technologies which form the basis of our customer facing and internal infrastructure. These include, but are not limited to:
  • Infrastructure as code and configuration management tools (Terraform, Ansible) which provision our cloud-based systems in AWS.
  • Containerization tools (Kubernetes and Docker) which are used by our CI pipelines, development environments, and certain production systems. We intend to move to a fully containerized architecture in future.
  • Standard web application components including load balancers, web servers and databases. Our core application tech stack is Nginx, MySQL and PHP, running on Linux (CentOS and Rocky).
  • Supporting software and tools including Python, Bash and Git.
  • We use AWS as our cloud provider so you must have deep experience working with AWS services and tools.
  • DevOps mindset - You must be knowledgeable about DevOps practices and principles and have prior experience working in a DevOps orientated engineering department.
  • Proficiency in conveying technical information in diagrammatic and written form - You should be able to communicate your architectural designs and ideas using diagrams, flow charts and similar techniques.
  • Written communication is very important in this role, playing a crucial part in the day-to-day sharing and discussion of ideas, so your written English must be good.

 

Nice to have:

  • Proven ability to rapidly learn new technical skills and absorb new information.
  • A good understanding of security best practices.
